10 Best Photo Locations in Zanzibar (2026 Guide)

February 25, 2026·8 min read·By Damian (Makame)

After 7+ years and over 500 photoshoots across Zanzibar, I've discovered every hidden gem, secret beach, and magical spot on this island. Here are my top 10 favorite photo locations, the ones that consistently deliver jaw-dropping results.

1. Jambiani Beach: The Hidden Paradise

Jambiani is my home base, and for good reason. This beach on Zanzibar's southeast coast offers pristine white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and most importantly, very few tourists. Unlike the crowded beaches of Nungwi, Jambiani gives you the feeling of having an entire paradise to yourself.

Best for: Couples sessions, honeymoon photoshoots, sunrise sessions
Best time: Early morning (6:30-8:00 AM) or late afternoon (4:00-6:00 PM)
Pro tip: The low tide here reveals stunning sandbanks that create a mirror-like effect, perfect for reflection shots.

2. The Iconic Pier at Sunset

A couple session on one of Zanzibar's iconic piers. Turquoise water, palm trees, and pure magic.

There's a reason pier photos are some of the most popular images from Zanzibar. The wooden pier stretching into the Indian Ocean, combined with a golden sunset behind you, creates an incredibly dramatic backdrop. The silhouette possibilities are endless.

Best for: Dramatic couple shots, proposals, silhouette photography
Best time: 30 minutes before sunset
Pro tip: Arrive early to get the pier without other tourists. I know the quietest piers on the island.

3. Paje Beach: Kite Surfer Paradise

Paje offers a completely different vibe. The wide, flat beach is famous for kitesurfing, and having colorful kites dotting the sky behind your photos adds incredible energy and movement to the images. The beach here is also wider than most, giving us plenty of space to work with.

Best for: Active couples, family sessions, fashion photography
Best time: Afternoon when kite surfers are out (2:00-5:00 PM)
Pro tip: The beach restaurants here make great spots for casual, lifestyle-style photos.

4. Nungwi: The Sunset Capital

If you want the most spectacular sunsets in Zanzibar, Nungwi is the place. Located on the northern tip of the island, it's the only area where you can watch the sun set directly over the ocean. The sky turns incredible shades of orange, pink, and purple.

Best for: Sunset sessions, wedding photography, romantic portraits
Best time: 45 minutes before sunset
Pro tip: Nungwi can be crowded. I know specific spots away from the main tourist area that give you the same stunning sunset without the crowds.

5. Exclusive Infinity Pool

This is one of my secret weapons. There's an exclusive infinity pool on the island with panoramic ocean views that creates absolutely stunning photos. The combination of the pool edge, the ocean horizon, and the sky creates a layered, luxurious backdrop.

Best for: Luxury couple sessions, honeymoon photos, fashion shoots
Best time: Golden hour (late afternoon)
Pro tip: This location is available as part of my Signature Story and Signature Editorial packages.

6. Kiwengwa Beach: The Untouched Coast

Kiwengwa on the east coast offers long stretches of untouched beach with beautiful palm trees leaning over the sand. It's less developed than other areas, which means more natural, raw beauty in your photos.

Best for: Natural, editorial-style sessions, palm tree backdrops
Best time: Morning light (7:00-9:00 AM)
Pro tip: The palm trees here create beautiful dappled light patterns, perfect for artistic portraits.

7. The Rock Restaurant Area

While The Rock Restaurant itself is iconic, the beach surrounding it offers incredible photo opportunities. At low tide, you can walk out to the sandbanks with the restaurant in the background, creating a uniquely Zanzibar composition.

Best for: Iconic Zanzibar shots, vacation photography
Best time: Low tide (check tide tables)
Pro tip: Combine this location with a Jambiani session since they're close together.

8. Mangrove Forests

For something completely different, Zanzibar's mangrove forests offer a moody, atmospheric setting. The twisted roots, filtered green light, and water reflections create photos that look like they're from another world.

Best for: Creative sessions, editorial photography, unique backdrops
Best time: Midday (the overhead light filters beautifully through the canopy)
Pro tip: This is a great option when the beach is too windy or the tide isn't right.

9. Your Hotel or Villa

Don't underestimate your own accommodation. Many Zanzibar hotels and villas have stunning architecture, private beaches, and beautiful gardens. Starting a session at your hotel adds a personal, intimate touch to your photo story.

Best for: Getting-ready shots, intimate moments, lifestyle photos
Best time: Any time
Pro tip: I always recommend starting at the hotel and then moving to the beach for variety.

10. Dhow Boat on the Ocean

A traditional Zanzibar dhow (wooden sailing boat) on the turquoise Indian Ocean is pure magic. The combination of the white sail, blue water, and golden light creates photos that are quintessentially Zanzibar.

Best for: Adventure couples, unique experiences, premium sessions
Best time: Late afternoon for golden light on the water
Pro tip: This can be arranged as a special add-on to any package.
