Zanzibar Honeymoon Guide: Romance, Beaches & Photography (2026)

Everything you need to plan the perfect honeymoon in Zanzibar β€” from a photographer who's captured hundreds of love stories on these beaches.

Zanzibar is one of the world's most romantic honeymoon destinations β€” and I'm not just saying that because I live here. After 7+ years on this island and photographing hundreds of honeymoon couples, I know exactly what makes a Zanzibar honeymoon unforgettable. This is my insider guide β€” honest, personal, and packed with tips you won't find in generic travel blogs.

Whether you're still deciding between Zanzibar and other destinations, or you've already booked your flights β€” this guide covers everything: where to stay, what to do, where to eat, how much to budget, and (of course) how to capture your love story with professional photography.

Why Zanzibar for Your Honeymoon?

🏝️Stunning beaches β€” crystal-clear turquoise water, powder-white sand
πŸ’°Affordable luxury β€” 5-star resorts at a fraction of Maldives prices
🌍Culture & adventure β€” Stone Town, spice tours, snorkeling
✈️Easy to reach β€” direct flights from many European & African cities
πŸ”’Safe & welcoming β€” one of the safest destinations in East Africa
πŸ“ΈPhotography paradise β€” golden light, iconic piers, tropical backdrops

Best Areas to Stay for Your Honeymoon

Where you stay shapes your entire honeymoon experience. Here's my honest breakdown β€” I've photographed couples in every area and know the pros and cons of each.

Jambiani β€” My #1 Recommendation for Honeymooners

This is where I live, and where I bring most of my honeymoon clients. Jambiani is a quiet fishing village on the southeast coast with the most authentic, uncrowded beach on the island. The water is crystal-clear turquoise, the sand is powder-white, and you'll feel like you have paradise to yourselves.

Why honeymooners love it: Peace, privacy, authentic local culture, stunning photography locations, and boutique hotels with a personal touch. If you want romance without tourist crowds, this is it.

Best hotels: Boutique guesthouses and mid-range hotels with private beach access. Not the place for mega-resorts β€” and that's the point.

Nungwi β€” Best Sunsets & Nightlife

Nungwi on the northern tip has the most spectacular sunsets on the island β€” the only place where the sun sets directly over the ocean. It's also the liveliest area with great restaurants, beach bars, and a vibrant atmosphere.

Why honeymooners love it: Stunning sunsets, calm water year-round (no tidal changes), lively restaurant scene, mix of romance and energy.

Paje β€” For Active Couples

Paje is the kitesurfing capital with a young, energetic vibe. Wide beach, great beach restaurants, and a more active honeymoon experience. Perfect if you want adventure alongside romance.

Kiwengwa β€” Classic Resort Experience

Large all-inclusive resorts with private beaches, pools, and spa facilities. If you want a classic luxury resort honeymoon where everything is taken care of, Kiwengwa delivers.

πŸ’‘ My honest advice: For the most romantic, authentic honeymoon experience, stay in Jambiani or Nungwi. Jambiani for peace and authenticity, Nungwi for sunsets and energy. Many couples split their stay β€” a few nights in each. For your photoshoot, I can come to any area (read my full Where to Stay guide).

Top 10 Romantic Activities for Honeymooners

Pure joy: barefoot in the waves, hand in hand. This is what a Zanzibar honeymoon feels like.

  1. 1. Professional honeymoon photoshoot β€” Obviously I'm biased, but a couples photoshoot is the #1 thing honeymoon couples tell me they're glad they did. You'll have stunning photos to remember this trip forever. See my packages.
  2. 2. Sunset dhow cruise β€” Sail on a traditional wooden boat while watching the sun set over the Indian Ocean. Bring champagne. Pure romance.
  3. 3. Private beach dinner β€” Candlelit table on the sand, feet in the warm water, fresh seafood, and stars above. Most hotels can arrange this.
  4. 4. Snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll β€” Crystal-clear water, tropical fish, and sometimes dolphins. A magical shared experience.
  5. 5. Stone Town exploration β€” Wander UNESCO World Heritage streets, visit the spice market, and try local street food together.
  6. 6. Spice farm tour β€” Zanzibar is the "Spice Island." Tour a spice farm and taste fresh vanilla, cinnamon, and cloves. Wear palm leaf crowns together.
  7. 7. Couples massage on the beach β€” Many resorts offer beachside couples massages. Pure relaxation after a day of exploring.
  8. 8. Swimming with dolphins β€” Early morning trip to Kizimkazi to see wild dolphins in their natural habitat.
  9. 9. Watch sunrise together β€” Set your alarm for 6 AM, walk to the beach, and watch the sun rise over the Indian Ocean. It's free, it's magical, and you'll have the beach to yourselves.
  10. 10. Do absolutely nothing β€” Lie in a hammock, read a book, float in the ocean. Zanzibar moves at its own pace β€” "pole pole" (slowly, slowly). Embrace it.

Honeymoon Budget Guide (2026)

One of the biggest advantages of Zanzibar over the Maldives or Seychelles is the value for money. Here's a realistic breakdown of what a 7-day luxury honeymoon costs:

CategoryBudget Range (per couple)
Flights (from Europe)€400–800 per person
Accommodation (7 nights)€560–2,100 (€80–300/night)
Food & drinks€140–560 (€20–80/day for two)
Activities (snorkeling, spice tour, dhow cruise)€150–500
Photography€330–750 (Signature Mini to Editorial)
Transport & visa€100–200
Total (7-day luxury honeymoon)€2,500–5,000 per couple

Compare that to the Maldives (€8,000–15,000+) or Seychelles (€6,000–12,000+) for a similar experience. Zanzibar gives you more variety, more culture, and more authentic moments at a fraction of the cost. Read my full Zanzibar vs Maldives vs Seychelles comparison.

How Long Should Your Honeymoon Be?

I recommend 7–10 days for the perfect honeymoon. Here's a sample itinerary:

  • Days 1–2: Arrive, settle in, relax on the beach. Get your bearings.
  • Day 3: Stone Town exploration + Forodhani night market.
  • Day 4: Spice farm tour + afternoon at the hotel pool.
  • Day 5: Professional photoshoot at golden hour. πŸŒ…
  • Day 6: Snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll or dolphin trip.
  • Day 7: Sunset dhow cruise + private beach dinner.
  • Days 8–10: Pure relaxation. Hammock. Ocean. Each other.

Capturing Your Honeymoon: Photography Guide

Your honeymoon is a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Don't rely on selfies and phone photos to remember it. A professional photoshoot gives you magazine-quality images that capture the real emotion and beauty of this special time.

Which Package for Honeymooners?

Most honeymoon couples choose one of these:

PackageDurationPhotosPrice
Signature Mini35–40 min25–35€330
Signature Story ⭐60–75 min60–80€500
Signature Editorial120 min120+€750

The Signature Story (€500) is the most popular choice for honeymooners: 60–75 minutes, up to 80–90 photos, 1–2 locations, and 1 Instagram reel. It's the perfect balance of time, variety, and value.

  • Outfit guidance included. Send me photos of your options via WhatsApp and I'll tell you which combinations work best. Read my complete style guide.

Practical Tips for Your Zanzibar Honeymoon

  • Visa: Most nationalities get a visa on arrival ($50 per person). Check requirements for your nationality before traveling.
  • Currency: USD is widely accepted. Tanzanian Shilling for local markets. Card payments accepted at most hotels and restaurants.
  • Internet: Buy a local SIM card at the airport for cheap data (~$5 for a week). WiFi is available at most hotels but can be slow.
  • Transport: Arrange airport transfers through your hotel. Taxis and tuk-tuks are available everywhere. For your photoshoot, transport is included.
  • Health: Malaria prophylaxis recommended (consult your doctor). Drink bottled water. Sunscreen is essential β€” the equatorial sun is strong.
  • Respect: Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Cover up when visiting Stone Town or villages (beach areas are relaxed). Public displays of affection are fine on the beach but be respectful in town.
  • Best time to visit: Dry seasons (June–October and December–February) for the most reliable sunshine. But I photograph year-round β€” even the "rainy" season rarely has full days of rain.
  • Booking your photoshoot: Most couples book ~1 month before their trip. During peak season (Dec–Feb, Jun–Aug), book earlier to secure your preferred golden hour slot.

Best Restaurants for a Romantic Dinner

  • The Rock Restaurant β€” Iconic restaurant on a rock in the ocean. Book well in advance. The experience alone is worth it.
  • Emerson on Hurumzi β€” Rooftop dining in Stone Town with stunning views and Swahili cuisine. Magical at sunset.
  • Beach restaurants in Jambiani/Paje β€” Casual, romantic, feet-in-the-sand dining with fresh seafood. My personal favorites.
  • Your hotel's private beach dinner β€” Most hotels can arrange a candlelit dinner on the sand. Ask when you book.
