Choosing where to stay in Zanzibar is one of the most important decisions of your trip. The island is bigger than most people expect, and different areas have completely different vibes, beaches, and photography opportunities. After 7+ years living here and photographing clients from every corner of the island, here's my honest guide.

I'm based in Jambiani on the southeast coast — but I know every beach, every hotel area, and every hidden spot on this island. This guide is not sponsored. It's just my honest take as someone who has watched thousands of tourists arrive, explore, and leave.

Quick Overview: Zanzibar's Main Areas

🌊Jambiani — Quiet, authentic, best for couples & photography
🌅Nungwi — Best sunsets, lively, most tourist infrastructure
🪁Paje — Kitesurfing, young energy, wide beach
🌴Kiwengwa — Resort area, all-inclusive, private beaches
🏛️Stone Town — Culture, history, UNESCO heritage
🐬Kendwa — Near Nungwi, calmer, beautiful beach

1. Jambiani — My Personal Recommendation

Couple on Jambiani beach — authentic, quiet, stunning

Jambiani: wide, uncrowded beach with crystal-clear water. This is where I live and work — and where I bring most of my clients.

Jambiani is a quiet fishing village on the southeast coast. It's the most authentic part of Zanzibar — you'll see local fishermen, seaweed farmers, and children playing on the beach alongside tourists. The beach is pristine, wide, and almost always empty.

✅ Best for

  • Couples & honeymoons
  • Photography sessions
  • Peaceful, authentic experience
  • Budget to mid-range accommodation

❌ Not ideal for

  • Nightlife seekers
  • Luxury all-inclusive resorts
  • Swimming at low tide (water recedes far)

Photography note: This is where I do most of my sessions. The light here is extraordinary — especially at sunrise and late afternoon. The sandbanks at low tide create mirror-like reflections that are absolutely magical.

2. Nungwi — Best Sunsets on the Island

Nungwi is on the northern tip of Zanzibar and is the most popular tourist area. It's the only place on the island where you can watch the sun set directly over the ocean — which makes it legendary for sunset photography and romantic evenings.

The beach is beautiful, the water is calm (protected from the tides that affect the east coast), and there's a lively restaurant and bar scene. If you want a mix of beach relaxation and nightlife, Nungwi is your place.

✅ Best for

  • Sunset lovers
  • Swimming year-round (calm water)
  • Couples who want nightlife
  • Wide range of accommodation

❌ Not ideal for

  • Quiet, authentic experience
  • Budget travelers (prices are higher)
  • Avoiding crowds in peak season

Photography note: I regularly travel to Nungwi for sunset sessions. The sky colors here are unmatched — oranges, pinks, and purples that reflect on the calm water. If you want dramatic sunset photos, Nungwi is the answer.

3. Paje — Kitesurfing Capital

Paje is just a short drive from Jambiani and has a completely different energy. It's the kitesurfing capital of Zanzibar — the wide, flat beach and consistent winds attract kite surfers from around the world. The beach is wide, the vibe is young and active, and there are great beach restaurants.

✅ Best for

  • Active travelers & kite surfers
  • Young couples & groups
  • Beach bar scene
  • Budget to mid-range options

❌ Not ideal for

  • Quiet, romantic atmosphere
  • Families with small children
  • Luxury seekers

Photography note: Paje is great for dynamic, energetic photos. Colorful kites in the sky add incredible movement and life to images. The wide beach gives us lots of space to work with.

4. Kiwengwa — Resort Paradise

Kiwengwa on the northeast coast is the resort area of Zanzibar. Large all-inclusive hotels with private beaches dominate here. The beach is beautiful — long stretches of white sand with palm trees leaning over the water. If you want a classic resort holiday with everything included, Kiwengwa delivers.

✅ Best for

  • All-inclusive resort experience
  • Families
  • Luxury travelers
  • Private beach access

❌ Not ideal for

  • Authentic local experience
  • Budget travelers
  • Exploring beyond the resort

Photography note: The palm trees in Kiwengwa are spectacular — they lean over the sand at beautiful angles, creating natural frames. Morning light here is particularly stunning.

5. Stone Town — Culture & History

Stone Town is the historic heart of Zanzibar — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow winding streets, ornate carved doors, and a fascinating blend of Arab, Indian, and African architecture. It's not a beach destination, but it's an essential part of the Zanzibar experience.

Most visitors stay here for 1-2 nights at the start or end of their trip to explore the culture, visit the spice market, and take a spice farm tour. I recommend combining Stone Town with a beach area for the perfect Zanzibar experience.

Photography note: Stone Town is a photographer's dream — the architecture, colors, and street life create incredible images. I sometimes incorporate Stone Town elements into editorial-style sessions.

Which Area Is Best for a Photoshoot?

This is the question I get most often. The honest answer: it depends on your style. But here's my breakdown:

AreaBest For PhotographyVibe
JambianiCouples, honeymoon, authentic moments⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
NungwiSunset sessions, dramatic skies⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
PajeActive, energetic, kite surfer backdrop⭐⭐⭐⭐
KiwengwaPalm trees, resort luxury, morning light⭐⭐⭐⭐
Stone TownEditorial, cultural, architectural⭐⭐⭐⭐

The good news: transport to all locations is included in every package. So even if you're staying in Kiwengwa, I can take you to Jambiani for a session, or to Nungwi for a sunset. You don't need to stay in the "best" area to get the best photos.

Couple on a pier in Zanzibar — available from any area of the island

This pier session was accessible from multiple hotel areas. Transport is always included — you don't need to stay nearby to shoot here.

My Honest Recommendation

If you're coming for a honeymoon or romantic trip: stay in Jambiani or Nungwi. Jambiani for peace and authenticity, Nungwi for sunsets and a livelier scene.

If you're coming for a family holiday: Kiwengwa or Nungwi. The all-inclusive resorts in Kiwengwa are great for families, and Nungwi has calm water year-round.

If you're coming for an adventure trip: Paje. Kitesurfing, snorkeling, and a young, active vibe.

If you want culture + beach: Start with 1-2 nights in Stone Town, then move to Jambiani or Nungwi for the beach portion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Zanzibar safe for tourists?

Yes. Zanzibar is one of the safest destinations in East Africa. It has a strong tourism infrastructure, welcoming local culture, and very low crime rates in tourist areas. Hundreds of thousands of international tourists visit safely every year.

Which area has the best beach?

All areas have beautiful beaches, but they're different. Jambiani and Paje (east coast) have the classic white-sand, turquoise-water look but are affected by tides. Nungwi and Kendwa (north) have calmer water year-round. Kiwengwa (northeast) has beautiful palm-lined beaches.

How do I get around Zanzibar?

Taxis and tuk-tuks are available everywhere. For longer trips, arrange transport through your hotel. I include transport to all photography locations in every package — so you don't need to worry about logistics for your session.

What's the best time of year to visit?

The dry seasons (June–October and December–February) offer the most reliable sunshine. However, Zanzibar rarely has full days of rain even in the 'rainy' season. I photograph year-round and get excellent results in every season.

How far is Stone Town from the beach areas?

Stone Town is on the west coast. Nungwi is about 1 hour north. Jambiani and Paje are about 1 hour southeast. Kiwengwa is about 45 minutes northeast. Most people combine Stone Town (1-2 nights) with a beach area (4-7 nights).

Do I need a visa for Zanzibar?

Most nationalities receive a visa on arrival at Zanzibar Airport. The fee is typically $50 USD per person. Check the latest requirements for your specific nationality before traveling.

Planning a Photoshoot During Your Stay?

Wherever you decide to stay in Zanzibar, I can come to you — or take you to the most photogenic spots on the island. Transport is included in every package. Just tell me your hotel area and your dates, and I'll suggest the perfect location and timing for your session.

Most clients book their session about a month before their trip. During peak season (December–February, June–August), I recommend booking even earlier to secure your preferred golden hour slot.
