Timing can make or break your photoshoot. The difference between harsh midday sun and soft golden hour light is the difference between "nice" photos and "jaw-dropping" ones. Here's everything you need to know about timing your Zanzibar photoshoot perfectly.
Best Time of Day: The Golden Hours
Zanzibar sits close to the equator, which means the sun rises and sets quickly, and the golden hour light is absolutely magical. There are two golden windows:
Sunrise Session (6:00 - 7:30 AM)
- Light: Soft, warm, and directional. Creates beautiful long shadows and a dreamy glow.
- Beaches: Completely empty. You'll have the entire beach to yourselves.
- Temperature: Cool and comfortable before the heat kicks in.
- Best for: East coast beaches (Jambiani, Paje, Kiwengwa) where the sun rises over the ocean.
- Downside: You need to wake up early! But I promise it's worth it.
Sunset Session (4:30 - 6:30 PM)
- Light: Warm, golden, and incredibly flattering. The most popular choice for couples.
- Sky: Zanzibar sunsets are legendary: oranges, pinks, purples.
- Mood: Romantic and relaxed. Perfect for couples and proposals.
- Best for: Nungwi (west coast, sun sets over the ocean) or pier locations anywhere on the island.
- Bonus: You can go straight to dinner after your session!

This is what happens when you time your session right: golden light, a stunning pier, and pure romance during the sunset golden hour.
What About Midday?
I generally avoid shooting between 11 AM and 3 PM. The overhead sun creates harsh shadows under the eyes and nose, and the light is flat and unflattering. However, there are exceptions:
- Overcast days Cloud cover acts as a natural softbox, creating even, beautiful light all day.
- Shaded locations Under palm trees, in mangrove forests, or at covered venues.
- Pool sessions The overhead light can actually look great for pool photos.
East Coast After 5 PM: The Hidden Magic
Here's a secret most visitors don't know: even though the sun sets on the west side of the island, the east coast beaches (Jambiani, Paje, Kiwengwa) look absolutely stunning after 5 PM. The sun is behind you, creating soft, even light on your face, no squinting, no harsh shadows. The sky turns into a soft pastel canvas.

Late afternoon on the east coast: soft, diffused light creates intimate, emotional portraits like this one. After 5 PM, the magic begins.
Understanding Zanzibar's Tides
This is something most photographers don't tell you: tides dramatically affect your beach photos. Zanzibar has significant tidal changes, especially on the east coast.
- High tide: Water comes up to the beach. Great for photos with waves, splashing, and the ocean as a close backdrop.
- Low tide: Water recedes far out, revealing sandbanks and creating mirror-like reflections. Beautiful for wide, dramatic shots.
- Mid-tide: Often the best compromise. You get both the ocean and some exposed sand.
I always check the tide tables before your session and recommend the best timing based on the look you want.
Best Time of Year for Photography
Zanzibar has two main seasons that affect photography:
Dry Season (June - October & December - February)
- Clear skies, consistent sunshine
- Lower humidity (more comfortable)
- Predictable golden hours
- This is peak tourist season, book early!
Green Season (March - May & November)
- Occasional rain showers (usually short and dramatic)
- Lush, green vegetation
- Dramatic cloud formations for epic sky photos
- Fewer tourists, more privacy on the beach
- Rain usually comes in the afternoon, so morning sessions are usually fine
My honest take: I shoot year-round and get incredible results in every season. Zanzibar rarely has full days of rain, even in the "rainy" season, you'll usually get beautiful light.
Weather Guarantee
If it rains heavily during your scheduled session, we reschedule for free. No questions asked. In over 500 sessions, I've had to reschedule fewer than 10 times. Zanzibar's weather is remarkably reliable.
Quick Reference: My Recommendations
- Couples/romantic: Sunset session, 45 min before sunset
- Proposals: 30 min before sunset (golden light + dramatic sky)
- Family sessions: Early morning (kids have more energy, beach is empty)
- Fashion/editorial: Sunrise for dramatic light, or overcast midday for even tones
- Wedding coverage: Flexible. I adapt to your ceremony schedule
