There's a place off the coast of Kizimkazi where the ocean floor rises just enough to create a strip of white sand surrounded by nothing but turquoise water. No buildings. No roads. No other people. Just you, the Indian Ocean, and the kind of light that makes everything look like a dream.
This is where I take my Sandbank Signature Experience clients — and it's the most visually stunning photoshoot location I've found in 7+ years of photographing Zanzibar.
Why a Sandbank Photoshoot?
Most photoshoots in Zanzibar happen on the beach. And the beaches here are beautiful — don't get me wrong. But a sandbank is something else entirely. You're standing in the middle of the ocean on a tiny island of sand that appears and disappears with the tides.
The visual effect is extraordinary: 360° of turquoise water, no distractions, no crowds, and the most incredible reflections when the water is shallow enough to walk through.
How It Works
I plan everything around the tides. The sandbank is only accessible during specific windows, and I monitor conditions days in advance to make sure we get the best possible experience.
The Tides Make It Magic
Timing is everything. When the tide is just right, the sandbank creates these incredible shallow pools where you can walk through ankle-deep water with the ocean stretching to the horizon in every direction. The reflections, the light bouncing off the water, the sense of being completely alone in the middle of the sea — it's unlike anything else.
I've shot hundreds of sessions in Zanzibar, and the sandbank consistently produces the most jaw-dropping images. There's a reason I created an entire experience around it.
What to Wear
Light, flowing fabrics work best on the sandbank. The wind and water create natural movement that looks incredible in photos. Think:
- Women: Long flowing dresses (white, cream, pastels, or bold colors like red/emerald), light wraps, bare feet
- Men: Linen shirts (white or light colors), rolled-up trousers or shorts, bare feet
- Couples: Coordinate but don't match exactly — complementary tones work best
Bring a change of outfit if you want variety. I always recommend at least one outfit you don't mind getting wet — some of the best shots happen in the water.
Who Is This For?
The Sandbank Experience is perfect for couples (honeymoon, anniversary, engagement), but I've also done incredible solo sessions, small family groups, and even fashion shoots here. If you want photos that look like they belong in a travel magazine, this is the session to book.
Why It's Limited
I only do 2-3 sandbank sessions per week maximum. The logistics are complex — private boat, tide timing, weather conditions — and I want every session to feel exclusive and unhurried. This isn't a factory operation. It's a curated experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if the weather is bad?
We reschedule at no extra cost. I monitor conditions closely and will contact you in advance if we need to adjust. Your experience matters more than sticking to a date.
Can I bring friends or family?
The boat comfortably fits up to 6 people. Additional guests are welcome — the experience fee covers the boat and photography regardless of group size (up to 6).
How far in advance should I book?
At least 7-14 days is ideal. During peak season (July-September, December-January), I recommend booking 3-4 weeks ahead. Book 14+ days early to save €50.
Is it safe?
Absolutely. The water on the sandbank is shallow (ankle to knee-deep). The boat captain is experienced and licensed. I've done this hundreds of times.
Can I add drone footage?
Yes! Drone add-on is available for €150. Aerial shots of the sandbank are absolutely spectacular and I highly recommend it.
