Nungwi is the northern tip of Zanzibar. Most tourists know it for the sunset side — but there's another part of Nungwi that very few visitors ever find. A secret beach with crystal-clear water, white sand, and the Maldives effect — shallow sandbanks that make you feel like you're standing in the middle of the ocean.
I've lived on Zanzibar since 2017. Over 7+ years and 500+ sessions I've studied every beach, every tide, every angle of light. Nungwi's secret beach is one of my favourite locations for sessions — but not the part that all tourists see.
In this article I'll tell you about the secret beach in Nungwi — a place that most guests of the island never find. Crystal-clear water, white sand, the sandbank effect and complete absence of crowds from the hotels.
Nungwi Secret Beach — at a glance
The Secret Beach in Nungwi: What Is It?
Most tourists in Nungwi see the same thing: the main beach in front of the hotels, bars, fishing boats, crowds. Beautiful — but not what I have in mind.
The secret beach is a few specific spots away from the tourist zone. To get there you need to know the road, the tide time and the angle of light. I know these places inside out.

The secret beach in Nungwi — crystal-clear water, white sand and not a single tourist from the hotels in the background. This is what I mean.
Why there are no crowds there
The main tourist zone in Nungwi is concentrated along the beach line with the hotels. The secret beach is on the side — there are no pedestrian routes there, no signs, no bars. You simply don't know about it if nobody tells you.
This is one of the advantages of working with a photographer who lives on the island. I don't fly in for sessions — I live in Jambiani. I know every beach, every tide, every hidden spot.
- ✓Complete privacy. You and me — no one else in the frame. No random tourists in the background.
- ✓Clean horizon. No boats, no sun umbrellas, no people. Only water and sky.
- ✓Freedom of movement. You can run, jump, laugh — without feeling that someone is watching you.
- ✓The best light. Away from the hotels there is no artificial lighting that spoils the sunset.
Important: I don't publish the exact location of the secret beach — that's why it stays secret. I take clients there personally. This is one of the advantages of working with a photographer who lives on the island.
The Maldives Effect: Sandbanks at Nungwi's Secret Beach
Here's what makes this spot truly unique: at the right tide, the water recedes and exposes shallow sandbanks — you stand in ankle-deep water with a 360° horizon. Crystal-clear water, white sand under your feet, the ocean all around. This is the Maldives effect — without flying to the Maldives.

Shallow water, white sand, 360° horizon. The Maldives effect — without flying to the Maldives. These shots are only possible at the right tide at Nungwi's secret beach.
What makes this spot different
Unlike the main tourist beach in Nungwi — which is crowded with hotel guests, bars, and fishing boats — the secret beach is tucked away from the tourist zone. The water here is exceptionally clear and calm, and the sandbanks create a visual effect that's impossible to replicate anywhere else on the island.
The combination of crystal-clear water, white sand, and complete privacy makes it one of the most photogenic spots I've found in 7+ years of photographing Zanzibar.
Why the water is so clear here
This part of Nungwi has a unique geography — the ocean floor is pure white sand, there's no seaweed, no rocks, no muddy flats. When the tide is right, the shallow water acts like a natural mirror, reflecting the sky and creating that extraordinary turquoise transparency.
- ✓Crystal-clear water — so transparent you can see every grain of sand beneath your feet
- ✓Shallow sandbanks — ankle-deep water with a 360° ocean horizon in every direction
- ✓No crowds — away from the hotel zone, no tourists in the background
- ✓Natural mirror effect — the shallow water creates stunning reflections for dramatic photography
💡 Important: The sandbank effect is tide-dependent. Not every day and not every hour will give you this result. I plan every session around the tides — that's why booking in advance and working with a local photographer makes all the difference.
Crystal-Clear Water: Why This Beach Is Special
What makes Nungwi's secret beach different from other spots on the island? The water. It's not just turquoise — it's crystal-clear, so transparent you can see every grain of sand beneath your feet. Combined with the shallow sandbanks, it creates photos that look like they were taken in the Maldives.

The water clarity at the secret beach is extraordinary. Ankle-deep, crystal-clear, with white sand beneath — this is the Maldives effect.
Best conditions for a photoshoot
The key is the tide. At the right moment, the water recedes just enough to expose shallow sandbanks — you stand in ankle-deep water with a 360° horizon. I check the tide tables days in advance and plan every session around the perfect window.
- 🌊Low tide window: shallow sandbanks appear, crystal-clear reflections, the Maldives effect at its best.
- ☀️Soft light: the light here is even and flattering — no harsh shadows, no squinting. Perfect for natural portraits.
- 🏖️Total privacy: away from the hotel zone, no tourists in the background. Just you, the water, and the sky.
📸 Pro tip: The sandbank effect is tide-dependent. I monitor conditions days in advance and will suggest the best possible date and time for your session. This is one of the advantages of working with a photographer who lives on the island.

Practical Tips: How to Prepare
What to wear
The secret beach is all about water and light. Light fabrics that flow in the wind look best here. White, cream, pastels, bold accents (red, emerald) — all work beautifully against the turquoise water and white sand.
- ✓For her: flowing maxi dress from chiffon or silk. It will flow in the wind — creating movement in the frame.
- ✓For him: linen shirt (white or light blue), light trousers. Barefoot — always.
- ✓Bring 2 outfits: one for portraits, one for water shots. Variety adds richness to the gallery.
How to get there
Nungwi is in the north of the island. From Jambiani or Paje — about 1.5 hours. From Kiwengwa — 45 minutes. From Stone Town — 1 hour.
Transport is included in every package. I'll come to your hotel or we'll meet at an agreed spot. You don't need to think about logistics.
Best time of year
Nungwi's secret beach is good year-round — the water is calm in any season. The sandbank effect is best during specific tidal windows, which I monitor and plan around. The dry season (June–October and December–February) offers the most reliable conditions.
💡 Tip from the photographer: If you're staying not in Nungwi, but on the east coast — don't worry. I regularly take clients to Nungwi from any point on the island specially for sessions at the secret beach. The road is worth it.
